Published under a pseudonym, J. K. Rowling's brilliant debut mystery introduces Detective Cormoran Strike as he investigates a supermodel's suicide in "one of the best books of the year" (USA Today). After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, creditors are calling, and after a breakup with his longtime girlfriend, he's living in his office. Then John Bristow walks through his door with a shocking story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry -- known to her friends as the Cuckoo -- famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man. You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this. Fast-paced and sharply drawn, this dazzling detective novel inspired Strike, the BBC crime drama series that has captivated millions of viewers worldwide.

Great New series to look forward to...
- Robert Galbraith (J K Rowling) has written the beginning of what I, for one, hope will be a new series. Complex, multi-layered and profane, The Cuckoo's Calling is a far cry from Harry Potter, which I also loved. Some might think it moves a little slowly but I enjoyed the gradual unfolding of the characters and Rowling's take on the celebrity culture. Cormorant Strike is a flawed but intensely human character. His super-capable and somewhat naive office sidekick, Robin, makes the perfect foil for his bleakness. The supporting cast is equally well drawn. Narrator Robert Glenister does a great job bringing the characters to life on this audio book as well. Highly recommended.

Interesting Modern Mystery
-
The Cuckoo's Calling takes you on a modern mystery ride that I was pleasantly surprised by. You follow the main character, Cormoran Strike, through his debts and personal issues, along with him forgetting that he had a temp secretary showing up.
He is hired by John Bristow to investigate the suicide death of his famous model sister, Lula Landry. Bristow is his first big time paying client so he takes the case. With the help of his new secretary he goes on an interesting adventure.
There are some dry moments here and there and it's definitely not a thriller by any means. Over all it is a good listen and I would easily recommend it to anyone.
