From award-winning novelist Wendy Webb comes a spine-tingling, modern-day haunted house story set on Lake Superior. Grace Alban has spent twenty years away from her childhood home, the stately Alban House on the shores of Lake Superior—for reasons she would rather forget. But when her mother's unexpected death brings Grace and her teenage daughter home, she finds more than just her own personal demons haunting the halls and passageways of Alban House. Long-buried family secrets, a packet of old love letters, and a lost manuscript plunge Grace into a decades-old mystery about a scandalous party at Alban House during which a world-famous author took his own life and Grace's aunt disappeared without a trace. That night has been shrouded in secrecy by the powerful Alban family for all of these years, and Grace realizes her family secrets tangle and twist as darkly as the hidden passages of Alban House. Her mother was intending to tell the truth about that night to a reporter on the very day she died. Could it have been murder, or was she a victim of the supposed Alban curse? With the help of the disarmingly kind—and attractive—Reverend Matthew Parker, Grace must uncover the truth about her home and its curse before she and her daughter become the next victims. Wendy Webb has woven a suspenseful mystery that skillfully skirts the boundary between what is paranormal and what is psychological.

Great Book

Loved this book. I could not wait to put my ear buds back in to continue listening to this great reader. The best voice I've heard! The reader kept me as interested as the story did! Great haunted house story! The ending lead me to think "sequel"?

Chilling modern gothic tale

The Fate of Mercy Alban is a chilling modern gothic tale of an American statly house on the shores of Lake Superior. Grace Alban returns to her family home upon the death of her mother after a twenty year absence. Accompanying her is her teenage daughter, Amity. There have been many Alban family tragedies over the years, circling back to a summer party in 1956, during which a famous author committed suicide and one of the Alban daughters disappeared, never to be heard from again.

The house is full of secrets and when Grace discovers love letters from the author to her mother she begins a search for answers which endangers both her and Amity. With the help of the local minister, Grace finds out just how poisonous family secrets can be.

This is a very convoluted story, at times hard to follow. The book is competently if not excitingly narrated.

A superb haunted house story

This is a great ghost/haunted house story. The prose is captivating, the story intriguing, and the characters realistic. I was sucked into the story at the beginning and couldn’t seem to tear myself away. As the mystery (or mysteries) unfolds, the sense of urgency increases, making the pages fly by. There is ample suspense, just enough romance, and a nice helping of the supernatural. Kirsten Potter, as always, does a fine reading.
