Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“This is a love story, but it is also a book by John Green…And it is written in his signature tone, a blend of melancholy, sweet, philosophical and funny…He shows us true love—two teenagers helping and accepting each other through the most humiliating physical and emotional ordeals—and it is far more romantic than any sunset on the beach.” New York Times Book Review
“John Green deftly mixes the profound and the quotidian in this tough, touching valentine to the human spirit. Green neither romanticizes illness nor sentimentalizes loss but brings readers into the hearts and minds of two teens pondering life, death, love, and the strange beauty of a universe.” Washington Post
“Smart, witty, profoundly sad, and full of questions worth asking, even those like ‘Why me?’ that have no answer.” Publishers Weekly
“Once again Green offers a well-developed cast of characters capable of both reflective thought and hilarious dialogue. With his trademark humor, lovable parents, and exploration of big-time challenges, The Fault in Our Stars is an achingly beautiful story about life and loss.” School Library Journal
“Green’s signature style shines: His carefully structured dialogue and razor-sharp characters brim with genuine intellect, humor, and desire. He takes on Big Questions that might feel heavy handed in the words of any other author…Then he deftly parries them with humor…Dog-earing of pages will no doubt ensue. Green seamlessly bridges the gap between the present and the existential, and readers will need more than one box of tissues to make it through Hazel and Gus’ poignant journey.” Kirkus Reviews
“Green is unflinchingly honest, bitterly real, and as witty as ever..I couldn’t put it down. Make sure you have a box of tissues and a few hours handy to curl up and read this unusual literary take on adolescence!” RT Book Reviews (4½ stars, Top Pick!)

Perfect YA emotion

For such a sad topic, the miserable life of young cancer patients, the story was a fun read. Green didn't focus on the misery, but included enough details about the day to day life of a sick kid to make it seem real. The love story is sweet and innocent and more deep than any teen could hope for.

Loved it!

SO GOOD. I'm still thinking about this book, days after finishing it. Smart, emotional writing perfectly blended with humor and beautiful prose. I couldn't get enough of quirky, quick-talking, adorable Hazel and Augustus - the two most self-aware teenagers of all time, who still somehow manage to have a touch of age appropriate innocence. I really loved it in audio - Kate Rudd delivered everything so well. I really appreciated John Green's sensitive and raw portrayal of such a heartwrenching experience. Equal parts comedy and tragedy. Best novel I've read lately!

Listen with a box of tissues

This is one of the best books I've listened to in a long time. John Green has long been a favorite author but this narrator really captures Hazel's (the main character) voice. I listened to this while on a long drive and the emotion of the story just kept hitting me so much that I didn't even care if the other drivers looked over and saw me sobbing--in the best possible way.
Honestly, everyone should experience this book.

So sad, but so good

This book is almost a paradox. The subject is so sad and tragic, yet as you listen you get glimpses of the love, friendship, and goodness that make it all worth it. How can something so depressing not leave you depressed? I have a friend with cancer, so at times the book was hard to listen to, hearing about the pain and suffering, but ultimately this book is about living, not dying.
In addition to the well-written, engaging story, Kate Rudd’s performance is great. Sometimes her male voices were a little awkward and forced, but she read with such passion that you truly believe she is actually going through what Hazel is going through. She gives each character a unique voice, so there’s no confusion about who is talking.
If you’re a crier, you may want a box of tissues, but the tears will be worth it. I look forward to more books from John Green.
