Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“Robinson knows how to generate tension without losing his sense of humor, a more difficult trick than you can imagine.” New York Times
“[A] smoothly written, well-paced romp.” Publishers Weekly
“Veteran SF humorist Robinson takes on American cultural icons with his customary love for irony and clever wordplay. A good choice for SF collections.” Library Journal
“Mike and Annie are the kind of characters that return to mind long after the book is done, and the tale is as jaunty as only Spider can make it in his Callahan mode. How can you possibly fail to enjoy this one?” Analog
“Swift pacing and ingratiating characters make what is actually a pretty hackneyed affair awfully amusing.” Booklist
“You get much more than you bargained for in this fun-filled yet serious novel. Spider’s the antidote for entropy, the blahs, and the pernicious notion that humor and good grace are absent from the SF field.” Ben Bova, science-fiction author and recipient of the National Space Society's Space Pioneer Award

Story

Captivating from page 1 and the best "I did not see that coming" moment I've ever seen or heard in a book.

Spider Robinson has done a stellar job building a very real and very captivating world just slightly into what could be our future (the early 2020's). Like many of the best Sci/Fi novels over the last 125 years, Robinson may very well be be proven to be one of the truly great prognosticators of the future of human development and technology. The characters are believable, interesting and most importantly, easily relatable. I really cared about Mike and Annie and caught myself not breathing in some of the more tense moments. I won't spoil it, but when the big twist happens, I totally didn't see it coming and as a prodigious reader, I am rarely surprised like I was here. Based on the story, tone and setting, a truly genius turn of events. Normally, I am slightly wary when I see "read by the author", but should Robinson ever decide to stop writing, I doubt he would have trouble finding work reading for others (which I hope doesn't happen, his writing is stellar). He seamlessly transitions between characters with his voice is almost hypnotic (I know that sounds cheesy but here it really applies). I am utterly confident that you will enjoy this book regardless of the genre you normally prefer. The Free Lunch is sci/fi that doesn't require the listener to suspend much disbelief. Fully plausible and thoroughly entertaining, at it's core, a story about acceptance, fitting in and doing what is right, regardless the cost. A+++++
