The highly anticipated sequel to A Demon in Silver, The Hangman’s Gate continues the epic saga of the War of the Archons. After uniting the bandit clans, the Iron Tusk has swept into Shengen and taken control of the empire. With an army behind him, he marches along the Skull Road, ready to lay waste to the lands in the west. The rag-tag defenders of Dunrun are all that stand in his way. With their country besieged on all sides, troubling rumors of a priestess amassing power in the North, and unnatural alliances to the south, no help is coming. Alone, they must hold back the god-like powers of the Iron Tusk, or see life as they know it come to an end.

Genre fun
- Reminiscent of A Demon in Silver, this continuation has a lot of the previous characters in brief, vignette length contributions, there is a preponderance of familiar cliché story points, i.e., all powerful evil, magic battle, with Gods that suddenly reappear after centuries of quiet. On the plus side, Ford knows how to pace and structure a balance between plot, character and violence, with the end of this book setting up an effective anticipation for the next in the series. Overall, for those who appreciate this genre, a good listen, with Derek Perkins giving a credible and professional rendering of the text.
