Like every other hobbit, Bilbo Baggins likes nothing better than a quiet evening in his snug hole in the ground, dining on a sumptuous dinner in front of a fire. But when a wandering wizard captivates him with tales of the unknown, Bilbo becomes restless. Soon he joins the wizard's band of homeless dwarves in search of giant spiders, savage wolves, and other dangers. Bilbo quickly tires of the quest for adventure and longs for the security of his familiar home. But before he can return to his life of comfort, he must face the greatest threat of all-a treasure-troving dragon named Smaug. In his fantasy classic, master storyteller J.R.R. Tolkein creates a bewitching world filled with delightful creatures and thrilling dangers. Narrator Rob Inglis will hold listeners of all ages spellbound with his skillful portrayal of hobbits, dwarves, and enchanted beasts.

Slightly overrated, but still a good story and brilliantly written
-
Very well written, which makes the story seem somewhat better than it actually is. Still, it's not bad, and I probably actually enjoyed it more as an adult than I did the last time I read it as a kid.
As to this audio edition, Rob Inglis's narration is quite good---I enjoyed listening to his characterizations and performances of the songs and so forth.

The Beginning of it All...
-
The Hobbit, in my opinion, is the greatest of all of J.R.R. Tolkien's works. That's including The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The fun of joining Bilbo on a random adventure that lands at his doorstep is a lot of fun. Bilbo never even wanted to go, nor did he know anyone of his companions. However he decides to take a chance and never looks back. A great adventure awaits those who decide to give this book a listen.
A quick side note, this was recorded back in 1991. So, please give the narration a chance to allow you to be dragged in.

Fun adventure
- This is a fun little adventure for kids, though adults can enjoy it as well. If you've already read (or seen) Lord of the Rings then you are familiar with the world and some of the characters and mythology. And if you've seen the film version of The Hobbit, you've seen a much-elaborated-upon version of this story. Rob Inglis was a capable narrator. I wouldn't say he's a favorite, but his diction and pacing were good. My one beef with this story is Tolkien's compulsion to address the reader directly. Otherwise it's a delightful little book.
