Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“Printz honoree Christopher returns with another tense and nimbly crafted psychological thriller…Two meticulously constructed voices assemble a dark and unnerving puzzle in this immersive mystery.”  Publishers Weekly
“A mystery that grows ever more disturbing with each revelation.” Booklist
“This taut, psychologically realistic murder mystery knits trauma, danger, tragedy, and hope into one cohesive tale…A gripping, heartbreaking, emotionally substantial look at war wounds and the allure of danger.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“Eerily dark, with clever clues sprinkled into the narrative, this spooky, eyebrow-raising mystery is a serpentine game of whodunit. The author does a fantastic job of crafting an antihero who is desperate to remember if he’s the bad guy and a heroine who is determined to prove her father’s innocence. Christopher keeps you guessing with a macabre play of the senses.” RT Books Reviews (4½ stars)

This book should be a decent listen for the YA set, at least, for the older YA set. Preferably, though, the listener will not have spent too much time watching police procedurals. Most of the tension in this story comes from a lack of understanding as to how murder investigations are run. I won’t get into details, as that would mean providing spoilers. It was the secondary characters that were more sympathetic. I didn’t really care for either the female or male lead. Still, if you’re just going into this book for some edge-of-your-seat mystery action, this book is a good pick. The added benefit of having it read by two narrators was also a perfect casting call.
