In Matt Braun’s The Last Stand, the land of the Five Civilized Tribes is stolen from its people by a federal government determined to make Oklahoma the forty-sixth state. Chitto Starr, a full-blood Cherokee, will not go gently into the night. Instead, Chitto ignites an armed rebellion—and brings an honest, determined lawman onto his trail. For Deputy US Marshal Owen McLain, hunting down Starr and his rebels is the last job he wants—and the one he has to do right, or die. Now the two men are locked in a duel of cunning and violence on a tragic, history-scarred land. And before one of them dies, they must each make a harrowing journey of honor, courage, and war.

Editorial Reviews

“I once again see the unique talent that placed Matt Braun head-and-shoulders above all the rest who would attempt to bring the legends of the Old West to life. In place of the laconic, two-dimensional characters of Hollywood, Braun has given us men and women of flesh and bone, blood and sinew, people we can see ourselves joining as they walk down those dusty streets of Oklahoma Territory.” Terry Johnston, author of Carry the Wind, winner of the Medicine Pipe Bearer Award, praise for the author

Author Bio: Matt Braun

Matt Braun (1932–2016) was the author of forty-four novels and four nonfiction works, including Black Fox, which was made into a CBS miniseries. He specialized in fictional stories of the western frontier, which have sold over forty million copies. He won the Golden Spur Award from the Western Writers of America for The Kincaids. Born in Oklahoma, he was a fourth-generation Westerner, steeped in the tradition and lore of the frontier era. His books reflect a heritage rich with the truths of that bygone time. Raised among the Cherokee and Osage tribes, he learned their traditions and culture, and their philosophy became the foundation of his own beliefs. Like his ancestors, he has spent most of his life wandering the mountains and plains of the West. His heritage and his contribution to Western literature resulted in his appointment by the governor of Oklahoma as a territorial marshal. He also won the Owen Wister Award for lifetime achievement and the Festival of the West Cowboy Spirit Award.
