Story

30, 20, 10…Touchdown Jesus!

I have no desire to shave a cat, dip it in honey, and throw it at my wife. But if I did, I’m sure Tony Dungy would know what to do. All I could think while listening to this was: Do deeply religious people feel they need more convincing not to hurt other people than the rest of us? Do they lack self-control? Uncommon Marriage makes it seem that way. If someone you know needs to read that woman are people, in 2014 mind you, just run away. Most of the advice in Uncommon Marriage a stink beetle would know. It is laced with offense passages, like that a woman can stray (like a pet?) while she is supporting a man’s viewpoint, so here’s what to do. Huh? Everything is either obvious or offensive in this childish sermon disguised as a book. I appreciate Tony Dungy’s attempt to enlighten me, but this book was just plain strange. I was expecting a DEEPLY FOCUSED theme about a complicated issue, but all I got was an AFTER SCHOOL special for teenagers who can’t control themselves. And don’t get me started on how Dungy compares himself to Moses over football. (Who knew JC was a Colts fan?) How ridiculous. With all the news about physical abuse and off the field violence by NFL players right now, Tony Dungy—a millionaire ten times over from books and speeches like this audiobook sermon—owes us much more. There was a teachable moment here that could have added to the national conversation about this issue once kept in the shadows. That being said, I wish Dungy would stick to coaching and let the adults discuss things properly. That is, AFTER he donates the proceeds from Uncommon Marriage to a fund that helps curb domestic violence. Does Jesus have to tell him to do that, or can he just do this one all by himself, using his conscience? After all, there IS a chapter titled Voluntary Submission in the audiobook. No. Really.
