Miles Vorkosigan graduates from the Barrayaran Military Academy with expectations of ship command, so he is disappointed with the assignment of meteorologist to an arctic training camp. But his tenure in the snow-covered north is cut short when he narrowly averts a massacre between the trigger-happy base commander and mutinous recruits. Miles is reassigned to investigate a suspicious military buildup near a wormhole nexus. Reviving his undercover persona as mercenary Admiral Miles Naismith, he expands his routine information-gathering duty into a rescue mission when the Emperor of Barrayar disappears. Miles must use his negotiating skills to avoid a showdown between powers competing for control of the wormhole, while searching for the Emperor and watching his back for the arctic base commander seeking bloody vengeance.

Best Vorkosigan Yet
- I am trying to listen/read this series in order and when I came upon this title, I knew right off this is the best one written yet. The way Lois Bujold writes Miles Vorkosigan in the story line, everyone can relate to. All of us have those odd parts of ourselves that we cannot stand, or are very self conscious of. This is also balanced with Miles' is exceptionally gifted intelligence. There is a great deal of humor and action in this book. I highly recommend it!

I should say that when reading the Miles Vorkosigan series, you might want to start out with Warrior's Apprentice, which is the first to feature Miles in high hyperactive form. The Vor Game follows our maniacal, hyperactive genius of a protagonist on yet another adventure set a few years after his initial foray into the larger galaxy. Meeting back up, by accident, with the mercenary outfit that he left at the end of the previous book, we find that things are not as he left them. Naturally, his inner circle are excited to see the return of Admiral Naismith, but will his Barrayan bosses agree?
The Vor Game is a fast-paced, slightly militaristic, futuristic world of multi-planetary systems connected by wormholes. The characters come to life in vivid language in plots that are just twisty enough to make you smile, but not so twisty that it requires three readings to figure out where the plot is going. I find it the perfect blend of quick-to-read science fiction, brilliant story telling, compelling characters that I can relate to, in a world that I can easily lose myself in.
The narration, by Grover Gardner, does a wonderful job of capturing the slight aristocratic tones of the high Vor, the wonderfully flat Betan accent, and the miscellaneous voices of the other planetary systems. Each character's voice is distinctive and I found it quite easy to keep them separate while listening to this audiobook.
My only gripe has more to do with the packaging of the audio CDs. They came in those new-fangled cardboard sleeves that seem dangerously scratchy given the thinness of the CDs that these are recorded upon. I wish softer sleeves could be used. I'm not certain if the mp3-cd has a similar issue.
