Vortex tells the story of Turk Findley, the protagonist introduced in Axis, who is transported ten thousand years into the future by the mysterious entities called "the Hypotheticals." In this future humanity exists on a chain of planets connected by Hypothetical gateways; but Earth itself is a dying world, effectively quarantined. Turk and his young friend Isaac Dvali are taken up by a community of fanatics who use them to enable a passage to the dying Earth, where they believe a prophecy of human/Hypothetical contact will be fulfilled. The prophecy is only partly true, however, and Turk must unravel the truth about the nature and purpose of the Hypotheticals before they carry him on a journey through warped time to the end of the universe itself. Vortex is thrilling and complex science fiction novel from Hugo Award-winning author Robert Charles Wilson.

Really enjoyed this one

This is the second Robert Charles Wilson book I have listened to, narrated by Scott Brick. I read the first two books in the series several years ago, and confess I am a fan of Robert Charles Wilson. My favorite books by him will always be the ones I fell in love with as a teen, but his more recent work is equally skillful and perhaps even more insightful. There is definitely a trend to be seen in this one and Burning Paradise, the last one I listened to.
Scott Brick does an excellent job of reflecting the humanity of Wilson's characters. He is also astonishingly good at conveying the feminine aspects of what are often the most central characters in WIlson's narrative -- something I love about all of Wilson's works. WIthout sounding stereotypically girly or high-pitched, Scott Brick speaks with a hard-edged softness that conveys the fiercely independent natures of Wilson's female protagonists.
Brick does just as good of a job at speaking for the men, who are perhaps more dissimilar from each other..as if Wilson is constantly re-creating a woman he once knew an loved, a sister perhaps, all of his women are very similar, yet far from simplistic.
Robert Charles Wilson has always been a pro at creating epic stories that delve into the sort of universal aspects of humanity. His prose is flawless and truly hauntingly beautiful at time. This makes his works well-suited for audio, because the words roll easily off Scott Brick's tongue and I can't help but think he must appreciate the beauty of what he reads, and feel honored to read them. "Vortex" and "Burning Paradise" are both very much exploring death, the afterlife, timelessness, expanding of consciousness, and the relativity of self. Sometimes he seems just a bit repetitive or long-winded, but in fact he is always chipping away at a problem, like an earnest scientist building his seemingly simple theorems until they develop into something absolutely breathtaking in their significance.
