From the bestselling author of Kafka on the Shore comes this rich and revelatory memoir about writing and running and the integral impact both have made on his life. Equal parts training log, travelogue, and reminiscence, this revealing memoir covers Murakami’s four-month preparation for the 2005 New York City Marathon. Settings range from Tokyo, where he once shared the course with an Olympian, to the Charles River in Boston, among young women who outpace him. Through this marvelous lens of sport emerges a cornucopia of memories and insights: the eureka moment when he decided to become a writer, his triumphs and disappointments, his passion for vintage LPs, and the experience, after age fifty, of having seen his race times improve and then fall back.

A Charming, Illuminating Memoir
- I absolutely love Haruki Murakami’s novels. Abstract, surreal, strange—their distinctive voice and ideas have always been mesmerizing yet enigmatic. So listening to “What I Talk About When I Talk about Running” was an absolute must. The entire memoir—from his decision to become a writer to his mind-bending experience while completing an ultra-marathon; from his life as the owner of a Tokyo jazz bar to his training for the New York City Marathon—is endearing, charming, fascinating. This brief, beautifully written glimpse into Murakami’s personal world shines new light on his novels, illuminating how his writing connects seamlessly with his life as a whole. His story is humble, meandering, calming—and Ray Porter’s thoughtful, conversational tone makes the listening experience all the better. As a bookworm and a runner, I couldn’t have asked for a better memoir. Highly recommended!
