White Horse is a unique postapocalyptic thriller chronicling one woman's quest to nurture those she holds dear against the backdrop of a shocking new world. Thirty-year-old Zoe wants to go back to college. That's why she cleans cages and floors at Pope Pharmaceuticals. If she can keep her head down, do her job, and avoid naming the mice, she'll be fine. Her life is calm, maybe even boring—until the end of the world, that is, when the president of the United States announces that humans are no longer a viable species. Zoe starts running the moment she realizes everyone she loves is gone. Her boyfriend Nick, fearing he's contracted the virus, leaves for Greece. When Zoe discovers she's pregnant—and entirely alone—she treks across the world to find Nick and reunite her growing family. On the way she encounters characters both needy and nefarious—some human, some monster, and some uncertain beings altered by genetic mutation—and comes to see that humanity is defined not by genetic code but by soulful actions and choices. Told in alternating before and after chapters, White Horse is a terrifying and romantic story that readers will be unable to put down.

brilliant debut novel!
- Alex Adam's writing style is mesmerizing and beautiful. Even the most graphic and horrendous scenes in this book were poetic enough to bring tears to my eyes. And unlike most books that switch from past to present tense throughout the entire book, I thought it fit extremely well and only added to the suspenseful storyline. Unlike young adult post-apocalyptic trilogies, the writing and content in Adam’s debut novel is more mature, though the adult content never feels overdone or unnecessary. That being said, it was fantastic, and I loved it. The writing alone was phenomenal enough to bring me back, but Emily Durante’s reading was the icing on the cake.

Beautiful prose!
-
I read this book before giving the audio a try, and though I prefer the print—Emily Durante’s voice bothers me a bit at times—I still recommend the audiobook if that’s your thing. Alex Adams’ prose is fantastic, and it made me overlook a few minor plot deficiencies. The beautiful language, though describing some pretty atrocious things, sucks you in and pulls you along, through a devastated world now inhabited by monstrous mutants and a handful of survivors just trying to make it. Zoe’s journey to find the father of her unborn child is full or terror and sadness, but she keeps going.
I’m so sad that the second and third books in this proposed trilogy seem to have been canceled by the print publisher. While this story doesn’t demand a sequel, I was looking forward to more from Alex Adams. But like I said, this book works just fine as a stand-alone.
