Great inside look at medicine
- I purchased the Audio book “You What?!” to listen to during a long vacation road trip. Dr. Chase’s book made the trip fly by, giving my wife and me an inside look at medicine. It seems that the book’s audience might be medical students and interns, but I was surprised at how I was drawn in by the candid stories, insights, and humor. Who knew that so many crazy things happen in the exam rooms and operating room!!! I found myself laughing out loud, and shaking my head in disbelief. I really appreciated seeing the doctor/patient relationship from the other side of the exam table, and learning so much about how to actually help my doctors care for me with more intentionality. The narrator also made the book come alive. It really is a “must” read.

just another doctor with a God complex

I enjoy reading books about medicine–both the history and the practice of it–so I often pick up doctors' memoirs.
This one I stopped reading after the good doctor stated he knew a patient would be "difficult" as soon as he read that they have depression or anxiety in their file (along with a litany of other conditions that he patronizingly deems sufficient justification for treating a patient with dismissive contempt).
Right, because anxiety and depression are just pastimes for hypochondriacs who are sadistically hellbent on inconveniencing the saintly doctors who are saddled with caring for them. Dr Chase concluded his medical studies decades ago and apparently was not interested in reading up on any subsequent research on two incredibly common medical conditions ever since. Sure, studies show that these diseases can be measured by diverse biomarkers–inflammatory, neurotrophic, metabolic–measurable through genetic, epigenetic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic, and neuroimaging assessments–but still: do depression and anxiety even legitimately exist, or is it just millions of nervous Nellies sitting around getting the vapours for want of good ol' bootstrapping? Many specialists, never mind general practitioners, are unable to effectively treat these conditions, so to reassure their egos about their efficacy and competence as Healers, they blame the patients for being weak-willed and contrarian. Imagine if doctors took the same attitude towards, say, pancreatic cancer patients. "I can't make your disease go away, so just stop pestering me, you insufferable nuisance!"
It's astounding how many supposedly-science-based medical practitioners believe–and more importantly, act–as though mental illnesses are spiritual diseases (they certainly won't call it that, but will still treat it as a matter of character or willpower or moral fortitude) rather than completely organic conditions occurring in a physical body for physical, measurable reasons. I lost 15 years of my life–roughly between 13-28–because doctors kept telling me I was "just depressed" until an endocrinologist bothered to run a blood panel and quickly diagnosed my Hashimoto's disease. What do you know? With my thyroid working properly, my depression got better in short order. I have an endocrine disorder that is easily and successfully treated with synthetic hormones. Of course, I would never have gotten my diagnosis or treatment if I hadn't been "difficult" (as Dr Chase describes those who seek treatment and continue to seek treatment until the problem is actually identified and solved).
If you're looking for a new, fascinating medical memoir by a doctor who doesn't come across as a condescending jerk, read the Unseen Body by Jonathan Reisman instead.
Good performer, though.

The performance by Bronson Pinchot is fabulous!

This review is from John Chase-the author. I will let you all decide the merits of the book itself. After listening to an audiobook every month for 20 years, I identified Mr Pinchot as my favorite reader for his ability to portray the emotion of the situation and that is why I wanted him to narrate my book when I wrote it.
He nailed it! He made this book better than I had hoped for with his performance
