Rudayrd Kipling was one of the most popular writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, winning the Nobel Prize for literature in 1907. Born in Bombay in 1865, Kipling and his sister were sent back to England when he was five. The cruelty they experienced at the hands of a couple that boarded with them in Portsmouth significantly influenced his life and his work. His return to India at the age of sixteen to work on a local paper also had a great impact, which can be seen in the issues of identity and national allegiance he explored in his work. Though best remembered for his children’s stories, he was also a master at the short story form.

This collection includes “Baa Baa Black Sheep,” “The Gardener,” and “Mary Postgate.”
