Bleak House is one of the greatest novels by one of the giants of English literature. It is also, in the words of one legal scholar, ‘the ultimate indictment of law, lawyers, and the legal system in the English language.’”

Crime Reads

Bleak House is a complex plot of love and inheritance set against the nineteenth-century English legal system with all its tortuous avenues and disguised resolutions. In the legal firm of Jarndyce & Jarndyce, a young orphan and ward of court Esther Summerson tells much of the story. As always, it is the skilled pen of Dickens himself that creates the momentum with his acute eye for both individual characters and their traits as well as the backdrop of Victorian London. It is read movingly by Sean Barrett as the main narrator and Teresa Gallagher as the young Esther Summerson.
