The story follows Hayden Chart, a young architect grappling with the recent loss of his wife in a war. Seeking solace and inspiration, he embarks on a journey to Europe, exploring England, France, Italy, and Spain. However, his romanticized expectations of the Old World are shattered as he discovers the superficiality of the art and culture he once admired. Disillusioned, Hayden questions his beliefs and values, realizing that his sense of belonging lies elsewhere. Returning to America, he finds a renewed sense of purpose by dedicating himself to his work and community, discovering that meaning can be found within his own life rather than in distant places.
